What if we could re-live the same day over and over? Experience a span of time which is repeated? What if life gives us a second chance? You can make things better or maybe worse! Time loop is a concept which can blend in with any genre – There are endless possibilities! You need to solve the puzzle, figure out a way to exit the loop. Listed below are my ‘Top 25 Time Loop movies’.

25) The Incident (2014)

A grieving couple on a camping trip encounters three strange nursery rhyme characters. Koko-di Koko-da is a visually striking, dark surreal metaphorical drama which is unsettling and disturbing.

A woman returns to her home 30 years after jail time. Home where she was accused of killing her husband and son. She is out to unravel the mystery. The House at the end of Time is an emotionally engaging movie with supernatural elements.

21) The Butterfly Effect (2004)

The protagonist experiences blackouts and memory loss at crucial points in his life. He later realizes that these blackouts work in a way which enables him to change his past. But what if there are consequences? The Butterfly Effect is inconsistent, but entertaining with a solid performance from Ashton Kutcher.

Blood punch is a love triangle in a twisted supernatural nightmare. This is a low budget dark comedy which is wildly entertaining.

19) Boss Level (2021)

Boss Level stars Frank Grillo as an Ex-soldier who gets trapped in a never ending time loop that results in his death. Several assassins are after him and he has to figure out a way to survive and find out why it’s happening. Boss Level has a great support cast with the likes of Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts and Michelle Yeoh, but it’s Grillo who is in fine form here. This is an over-the-top Sci-Fi Action fun ride!

18) Palm Springs (2020)

Palm Springs is a Rom-Com about two wedding guests who are stuck in a time loop. They are forced to relive the same day over and over again. They fall in love and at the same time, tries several ways to escape the loop. Will they succeed? Palm Springs is lively, funny and dark with good chemistry between the leads.

17) Dead End (2003)

Dead End is a creepy low-budget horror film. On a Christmas eve, a family while driving, takes a short-cut and the strange events that unfold form the premise of the movie. Nothing is what it appears to be! Dead End is mind bending with dark humor and unsettling moments.

16) The Final Girls (2015)

A group of friends attending the screening of a Slasher film gets transported into the movie where they have to fight off the film’s killer. The Final Girls perfectly pays homage to 80s fun camping slasher movies with cleverly placed time elements.

15) Before I Fall (2017)

Genre: Fantasy/Mystery | Rating: PG-13

Before I Fall focusses on a teenager who has to relive the same day over and over again following a car crash. Stuck in a time loop, she tries to change herself and make a difference. The way it impacts her and her friends and whether she can get closure forms the rest of the movie. This is an engaging one with a good performance from the lead actress.

A taxi driver picks up a passenger. Along the journey, the passenger inexplicably disappears from the backseat of the car and the loop continues. The Fare is very well crafted movie with an intriguing storyline which will keep you guessing.

13) Predestination (2014)

An Agent is given a mission to travel back in time to prevent a bomb attack. Things does take a turn! This is a twisty, mind-bending Sci-Fi thriller with solid performances especially from Sarah Snook.

12) Donnie Darko (2001)

A troubled teenager, Donnie Darko befriends an imaginary figure in a rabbit costume who tells him that the world will end in 28 days. The script and direction aided by an excellent performance from Jake Gyllenhaal makes this a cult classic.

11) The Endless (2017)

The Endless tells the story of two brothers who visit a UFO death cult they formerly belonged to. A video tape encourages them to visit the site and look for answers. The movie has an eerie vibe throughout with realistic and grounded performances. Bizarre, weird and a compelling watch!

10) Happy Death Day (2017)

A teenager is murdered on her birthday and relives the same day to the same fate. Who is the killer? Can she solve the mystery? Happy Death Day is a fast paced entertainer with an energetic lead performance from Jessica Rothe.

Four friends invent a machine in their garage which offers more than what they bargained for. Primer is the best example that budget doesn’t define a movie, but a perfectly executed good idea does.

Eight friends on a dinner party experience strange events when a Comet is passing overhead. Coherence is an excellent cerebral mindbender with good performances from the cast.

Lola has 20 minutes to save her boyfriend in three different scenarios. Run Lola Run is a riveting action packed love story with Franka Potente in fine form!

A boating trip with friends turns into a nightmare when weather forces them to abandon their ride and get into a ship. Triangle is an excellent mind twister which offers plenty of thrills, chills and surprises!

5) 12 Monkeys (1995)

A deadly virus destroys ‘almost’ everyone in Earth in the year 1996. A prisoner from the future volunteers to travel back in time to gather information on the same. 12 Monkeys is a fantastic film which is so relevant today. The non-linear narrative with flashbacks and loops could be trippy, but worthwhile. The powerhouse cast also makes a difference!

4) Source Code (2011)

Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an army pilot who finds himself in the body of another man. His mission is to find and stop the bomber of a train. He has 8 minutes to do so. This is an excellent thriller full of twists and turns which will keep you interested till the very end.

3) Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Genre: Sci-Fi/Action| Rating: PG-13

As the Tagline suggest ‘Live. Die. Repeat’ – a soldier lives to fight another day with the aliens and the cycle continues once he dies. A warrior joins him to solve the puzzle. Edge of Tomorrow has everything from humor, thrills, action offering non-stop entertainment. Cruise, Blunt and Paxton shines!

2) Timecrimes (2007)

Genre: Sci-Fi/Mystery/Horror| Rating: R for Sexuality and Profanity

Hector and wife are renovating their house. While relaxing, Hector spies on a woman in the woods near his property. He sets out to investigate. Timecrimes is one of my favorite movie in the Time loop series. It’s a smartly executed intriguing premise which will surely make you scratch your head in a good way.

1) Groundhog Day (1993)

Genre: Comedy/Romance/Fantasy| Rating: PG-13

And my numero uno from the list – Groundhog Day starring the wonderful Bill Murray as a weatherman reliving the same day over and over again. From Selfish to Selfless, the movie shows the transition of the main character as the day keeps repeating. Groundhog Day has a perfect blend of comedy, romance and some lessons in life! Must watch!
